in this instance, SMBsesssetupX sends "password length = 0x24" and
"unicode password length = 0x58".

?!!!!!!?!

needless to say, the SMBsesssetupX fails miserably against a samba server.

LMcompatibilityLevel=0x3 is designed to disable NT and LM hashes and to
use "NTLMv2" only.
