NT Terminal Server and Samba Authentication

Before I describe my problem:
What are the best tools/setup for tracing protocol problems between NT
and Samba?
(tcpdump? ethereal? protocol references?)

An NT Termial Server (essential NT 4, but no way of being sure about it
with M$)
talks to a Samba 2.0.0. I have enabled 'plain text passwords' on the NT
machine
so that Samba can authenticate against NIS for its 'shares'.

Samba will ask for a password, before allowing access to it's shares
(security=user)

Problem:
Sometimes a user will be refused a connection.. repeatedly popping up a
password window.

Workaround 1:
Stop and start Samba - This will allow that password to be accepted, but
affects other users
on Windows 95 machines.. who loose their connections.

Workareound 2:
Reboot NT machine and stop and start Samba

What's going on?
