One of the things that I found is that I learned to recompile the kernel
when I had to upgrade my 2.0.36 kernel in Red Hat 5.2 to the 2.2.x series
so that I could make use of my Zip Plus drive... 2.0.36 bombed with an
Oops everytime I tried to access it - whereas, 2.2.x didn't.

Eventually, everyone will have to learn it, IMHO. Unless they're willing
to pay for someone else to do it. I've already had clients that have
called me just for that purpose - they want to upgrade something on their
system.

Thing is that it *does* get expensive, and so what I do is if they want to
learn how to do it themselves, I offer to teach them so that they don't
have to call me out all the time... But there are the few that don't mind
letting their pocketbooks do the thinking for them. They refuse to learn,
so they force themselves to call me (or someone else). Currently, I'm the
only Linux computer dude that I know of in my area - everyone else works
with Windows or the Macintosh (I do them, too, but I don't advertise it as
much as I do servicing Linux.)
