Wildly off the cuff here, but it *sounds* as though we're incrementing
some counter somewhere (samba file descriptor number or some such) and
not wrapping properly when we reach an upper bound.

Of course, that's either blindingly obvious or miles off base.  Just 
thought I'd show that I'm reading the messages.  ;)
