Connecting to shares across different domains

Is it possible to connect to shares across different domains? We have 2
domains, X (local) and Y (remote) and we authenticate via our NT PDC on
domain X. Can users on the remote domain Y connect to shares on domain
X? Does there need to be a trust relationship? And if so, how?
