preexec; when to do it?

No it doesn't... "root preexec" is done before setting the working 
directory.  That didn't work for my situation, as I needed to start
a process running as the connecting user (what I am doing is sharing
ClearCase views, which are directories in a virtual filesystem that
only exist once a viewserver is started), but maybe it's enough
to not worry about this for the general case.
