Displaying Windows NT ACLs with cacls

Has anyone had trouble with using the cacls program to display Windows
NT ACLs on a Samba volume. Individual ACLs can be changed
successfully and they get mapped to the right UNIX permission bits,
but doing a cacls without any extra arguments (i.e displaying the ACLs
only) gives a whole lot of junk about various domain users not being
found and stuff like that.
I've tried this with Samba 2.0.6 both as a domain member and
stand-alone, and with NT4 server as a domain member and as not.
Anyone have any ideas?
Tim.
Side note: I can't believe the command line options for cacls. What a
joke! Who thought of /t for subdirectory recursion? Just about every
other MS-DOS program uses /s for this.
