Perhaps it is on an other subnet, than defined in smb.conf ? Check the
interfaces parameter in the smb.conf, and or remote broadcast
parameters.
If the host is not reachable via these nmblookup -a won't retun any
status .. :)

But .. perhaps there is a other way : query the WINS database.
