VFS merge

I've just merged in the VFS stuff into the HEAD branch.  Go crazy.  At
the moment it compiles on Solaris 2.6 and Linux, but I haven't tried
it on anything else yet.  I'd like to do some integration testing on
things but my eyes hurt too much.
