getpass() limited to 8 characters

At least on our system getpass() is limited to 8 characters. It is a little
too short for a NT :( And I remember recently a report, that after passsword
was changed with smbpass, neither old nor new worked. Smells, like password
was nine characters ...

Unfortunately, there is no way to (automatically) test for it, because
getpass() reads directly from /dev/tty. What about other systems?
