compiling latest version on kernel 2.1.126 I got this error:
Compiling smbmount.c
smbmount.c:26: linux/version.h: No such file or directory
smbmount.c:29: #error this code will only compile on versions of linux
after 2.1.70
make: *** [smbmount.o] Error 1

the kernel includes directory doesn't have a version.h or autoconf.h file
UNTIL you at least do your make menuconfig.

Maybe the UNIX_INSTALL.txt file should include some text saying
"You must have kernel sources installed and have at least run the
make menuconfig/config script in order to generate the version.h and
autoconf.h libraries needed to compile samba"

if it's in another doc, just hit me and say shut up :-)
