	I can't actually speak to the problem, but I do
	recollect that Henry Spencer once provided a 
	suite of locking-routine implementations for
	portability to various vendor's platforms.

	This is available as part of the cnews distribution,
	although I don't recollect if the discussion I read
	was there or not...
