/etc/passwd -vs- /private/smbpasswd

New to list:

        I download the latest (1.9.18p4) version of samba, was thinking
about upgrading form 1.9.17., but having a problem reading my
/etc/passwd file.  I don't want to have two password files on my
network.  Is their a way around the smbpasswd file?  and how do I get it
to work...
