Don't forget 

4). ONC/RPC (aka SunRPC - the basis for nfs etc.)

Advantages - built into all UNIXes.
Ported to Win32 (and even Win31).
Free source code (BSD license) - unlike DCE/RPC.
Defined method of using secure rpc.

and my favourite reason :-).

I know it backwards (having used
it at Vantive & ported it to every 
known UNIX, ported it to run over
SPX, added compression & encryption
etc, etc... :-).
