Other ftp servers allow you to:
	get samba.tar.gz

where samba is a directory, and it will recurse for you,
giving a tar archive of the tree.

This would be very convenient...
You may be able to just turn it on (I'm not a current
expert in ftp servers).

(I'm using fr for now).
