autoconf merge - maybe wednesday

I've finished the autoconf work, at least as far as I can get without
more people testing, so I may do the merge into the main branch
tomorrow. This is just to warn people doing active development on the
main branch :-)

So far the autoconf stuff has been tested on:

Solaris sparc 2.6
Solaris sparc 2.5
SunOS 4.1.3
Linux intel 2.1
Linux intel RH 5.1
IRIX 6.4
AIX 4.2
Ultrix 4.4
OSF1 4.0

If you have another platform available then I'd appreciate if you
could test it when the merge has happened and let me know how it goes.
