Samba 1.9.18p10 and OpLocks and NFS and Eudora

??? That is really strange and indicates an error in the NFS
implementation. The filesystem calls that Samba makes should be the
same on NFS or local drives.

As you don't say what OS the NFS client and server are running on this
doesn't give us much to work with.

I suggest you run a sniffer (such as tcpdump -v) to look at the NFS
and SMB traffic when starting up and see if there is anything
obviously wrong. Also looking more closely at what you mean by "hangs"
would be a good idea (does SMB network traffic stop? What are the last
calls?  What system calls is the smbd doing at the time? strace is
your friend)
