TNG 2.6 does not compile on HP-UX 10.20

I can't get TNG 2.6 to compile under HP-UX 10.20 using gcc 2.9.2.
The error message is from the linker (ld B.10.37).  
The error message is:

# make install
...
Linking bin/smbd
libtool: link: warning: this platform does not like uninstalled shared
libraries
libtool: link: `bin/smbd' will be relinked during installation
/usr/ccs/bin/ld: Unsatisfied symbols:
   dlclose (code)
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1

The output from configure is:

# ./configure --prefix=/opt/samba
...
checking for dlopen in -ldl... no
checking for dlopen... no
checking for dld_link in -ldld... no
checking for shl_load... yes
creating libtool
...
