OK done it, there was an entry in the debug info that said the smbpasswd file
was corrupt so deleted it and recreated it.  Now all is sweetness and light.

Thanks for all the help, BSK to the samba team, if you're ever in this shoulder
of the forest drop in for pint of real ale at our local watering hole.
