smbpasswd -> /etc/passwd

Is there any way (a script, black magic, etc) to convert smbpasswd passwords
to
either shadowed or md5'd passwords?  I know there's a "unix sync password"
option,
but this doesn't work for me in the latest TNG:

  getsmbfilepwent: returning passwd entry for unix user homey, unix uid
10042
  Password change for user: homey
  Dochild for user homey (uid=0,gid=0)
  expect: Input/output error
  Response 2 incorrect
  Child failed to change password: homey
