wierd logon problems

Thanks for all the help, everyone.  Here is the combination of 
settings in the smb.conf file that made it work:

[global]
   domain master = yes
   logon path = \\poweredge\public\netlogon
   logon home = \\poweredge\public\netlogon

 [netlogon]
   comment = Network Logon Service
   path = /public/netlogon
   guest ok = yes
   writable = no
   share modes = no
   browseable = yes

[Profiles]
    path = /public/netlogon
    browseable = no
    guest ok = yes
