Photoshop and Samba having trouble communicating

We have a SUN server running Solaris 8 and Samba 2.0.7 on a network that
contains 16 MACS and about 40 PC 's that have both NT and 2000 for an OS.
They all seem to talk back and forth just fine until you try to open
multiple images from the Samba share in Photoshop.  We are a photo lab
working with jpg images stored on the SUN server.  It seems that some of
the images are tied together, Photoshop thinks these two separate images
are the same if you tell it to open the second image in a different window
it will open the first.  Once the first image is closed the second can be
opened with no problem,  and then you can't open the first image.  Any help
would be appreciated.
