We found this even without Samba on the network. Is it Samba TNG's nmbd
or Stable samba that has a problem as a WINS client?

We also get this without Samba (This was one of my main arguments for
using Samba ;-). It still happens, but very rarely)

Unless I missed it, there didn't seem to be a problem in your smb.conf.
Whilst the problem could be Samba, in my experience these things are to
do with Windows NT.
