How do you join a w2k pro

I´ve got a network with windows 2000 professional. I´m using samba 2,6 TNG
on a Red Hat 6.2
 
The problem is that i cant join the domain with the root account. The
computer say that the account don´t exists on the pdc.  I wonder if there is
any out there that know how to do it. So i don´t have to buy a windows
server.
