Sorry, this reply is completely off topic, I know.

What I do to avoid making settings on the workstations is
using a transparent proxy for port 80.
All outgoing traffic to port 80 is redirected to a local port,
(requires transparent proxy support in the kernel)
running a transproxy daemon, which rebuilds the URL by adding
the hostname to the request, and then consults the proxyserver.

This is really transparent to the clients, and does not require settings
on the workstations.
