Mine says 'smbd version TNG-alpha'

It would appear that you are not using Samba TNG (or you are using a
very old version). Are you using the smbd and nmbd from HEAD with the
Samba daemons? If so, this hasn't worked for a while. Try grabbing the
latest CVS or tarball and try again.
