NT machine accounts in FreeBSD?

I'm using FreeBSD 4.0. The machine account name I'm
trying to add is 6 characters long - 7 including the
trailing '$'.
DO I need to use some sort of escape character in
/etc/password when representing a '$' or something?
It's nice to see another Adelaidean on the list.
