Which version of Samba ? With TNG you should add users with samedit, instead
of
smbpasswd -a.

If you are using TNG, test the logins with:
samedit -S .
ntlogin root <rootpass>

(p.s. you can use smbclient with "//" instead of "\\\\" ;)
