Any reason smbpasswd couldn't be smart enough to strip off the $??  Sounds
like this will be a common problem.
Just do:

    strtok(machinename,"$");

smbpasswd -a -m MECHINE-NAME

no '$' appended.  smbpaswd doe this for the.  the -a indicates
that you are adding an account.
