Yup, I think the problem is different because I have:

[Profiles]
   comment = Profiles directory
   browseable = no
   path = /home/samba/profiles
   writable = yes

and

polux:/etc/samba# ls -ld /home/samba/profiles/
drwxrwsrwx   3 root     staff        1024 Nov 12 09:47 /home/samba/profiles/

This is very strange...
