Yes, well apparently you need to run smbd, nmdb and the 
new lsarpcd daemons.

root at mole source]# bin/smbpasswd cartegw
error connecting to aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:445 (Connection refused)
error connecting to aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:445 (Connection refused)
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Password changed for user cartegw

Honest folks.  Still trying to work out what else is going 
on here.
