Thanks for your e-mail.

Sun seems to have combined yppasswd and passwd - perhaps they do
a test on whether NIS is up and running?  We use "passwd" on the
NIS master to change the NIS passwd table.

But it's worth a try to specify "yppasswd" - maybe there is a
difference....

The listings for "passwd" and "yppasswd" looks like this:

! hermes# ls -al /bin/yppasswd
-r-sr-sr-x   3 root     sys        99640 Oct  6  1998 /bin/yppasswd
! hermes# ls -al /usr/bin/yppasswd
-r-sr-sr-x   3 root     sys        99640 Oct  6  1998 /usr/bin/yppasswd
! hermes# ls -al /bin/passwd
-r-sr-sr-x   3 root     sys        99640 Oct  6  1998 /bin/passwd
! hermes# ls -al /usr/bin/passwd
-r-sr-sr-x   3 root     sys        99640 Oct  6  1998 /usr/bin/passwd

Are you using NIS and "unix passwd sync"?  Could I take a look at
your smb.conf globals?
