Samba 2.0.5a NT authentication question

Server: Solaris 2.7
Samba: 2.0.5a

security = user
workgroup = DPMAIN-NAME
domain logons = yes
encrypt passwords = yes

We are using the server as a PDC in this test environment. I can get
the NT workstations authenticated at some point in time. At that point
in time, I captured a snapshot of the smbpasswd file.

At some point later, the smbpasswd file was updated by a UNIX process
that updates passwords around the network.

After the smbpasswd was updated, the NT workstations will not
authenticate at all, indicating it is not in the DOMAIN-NAME. There is
an entry for the NT workstation in the smbpasswd, but it has different
fields 3 and 4 from the "snapshot" version.

I modified the smbpasswd file and copied in the NT workstation line from
the "snapshot" version of the smbpasswd file, but that does not work
either.

QUESTIONS:
1. Does the NT system capture some data from the PDC when it initally
authenticates and uses that information for subsequent connections?
2. Any suggestions on how to update the smbpasswd with the new user
authentications without changing the NT system entries in the smbpasswd
file?
