Why me?

We have been running samba here for years, and I am attempting
to migrate from 1.9 up to the 2.0.x versions on a BSDI 4.0.1
box. After untarring the file I run the configure program
and this is what I get:
checking configure summary
ERROR: No locking available. Running Samba would be unsafe
configure: error: summary failure. Aborting config
OK, so I look in the config.log and I see this:
configure:1695: gcc -o conftest -O conftest.c -ldir 1>&5
ld: cannot open -ldir: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 1684 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
...
configure:1885: sys/id.h: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 1884 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include <sys/id.h>
...
configure:1925: compat.h: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 1924 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include <compat.h>
configure:1925: rpcsvc/nis.h: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 1924 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include <rpcsvc/nis.h>
configure:2005: sys/priv.h: No such file or directory
configure: failed program was:
#line 2004 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include <sys/priv.h>
And the last one (after a bunch of other ones) is:
configure: failed program was:
#line 9764 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"
#include "./tests/summary.c"
[EOB]
After speaking to someone else who has BSDI 4.0.1, and it compiled
fine, I think I have something wrong with this particular system,
but I don't know where to start looking.
Anyone care to take a stab at this and give me a hand?
Thanks,
-Lee
