Ah!  That's the key.  "Native compiler".  I had a fresh CVS download so
there was no config.cache file.  I had just done a ./configure and it
picked up gcc automatically.  I deleted the config.cache did a make clean
and the CC=cc ./configure and it compiled with NO WARNINGS!  Yeah!!!
