the amount of work needed hasn't been assessed yet, although doing so
would be a trivial matter (creating or otherwise obtaining a netmon trace,
and examining it) - half a day max?

the rest of your message [deleted] is a standard samba admin issue: i
recommend that you pursue this on the samba digest or in archives etc etc.
