Integrating "locate" ?

Hi,
  I just had a crazy idea. Are there some function calls in SMB to look
for a file on the server ? and if yes , is it possible to use locate 
to return the filenames ? ppl here ask me way to often where they can
find
file xyz ... and a find via network takes some time on 50 gb :)
