From jeffs at qualitymetalcraft.com Tue Oct 1 14:53:03 2002 From: jeffs at qualitymetalcraft.com (Jeff Smith) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:30 2004 Subject: Diagnosis.txt Suggestion from a samba newbie Message-ID: <000001c2695f$ccdd25d0$13c809c0@CADNT> I am a Samba nubie admin and I found the DIAGNOSIS.txt article on the samba.org/samba/docs webpage extremely helpful in finding the cure for my samba configuration troubles. If this document is still being maintained, I would suggest a minor change. As it is a step-by-step document where each step logically follows the other to diagnose a problem, I followed it up to "Test 9" where I encountered a "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" error that I could not resolve with the suggestions that accompanied that particular test. Of course since my system failed "TEST 9", I erroniously assumed that continuing the sequence of tests would not be fruitful. After searching the samba mailing list archives, I finally discovered that for validating to Samba from NT or W2K the password encryption selection must be enabled. This worked for me and eliminated my error. I decided to continue reviewing the DIAGNOSIS.txt article out of curiosity and discovered that the fix I needed was there all along. It was in the documentaiton for "TEST 11". I would recommend adding wording to "TEST 9" that includes reference to this encryption requirement, or at least refers the adminsitrator to the following tests. Hopefully this information will be of some use. Can something that make you feel good stop you from feeling bad? UCLA Medical Center researchers continue testing this in their pain labs. How about working there? Apparently kids are asked to submerge their hands in ice water. Those watching "funny videos" where able to keep their hands submerged 40% longer. The notion that humor might produce healing enhancing changes in the body is gaining respect. Regardless, we can all laugh a little more, and that has to be good. Eckert, D.C. - Editor http://www.PortlandHealth.org/doctorsoffice.shtml Growing Up With Orthotics: The foundation for the entire body and 25% of all bones in the human body are in the feet. From birth until age six, many parents will see numerous changes occur in their child's stance and movement including knock-knees and flat feet (Ref #1). At age six or seven, bone growth slows to match bone growth in the rest of the developing body and a healthy alignment of the feet should be observed. This is a great time to visit a healthcare professional to have your child examined for proper foot structure and gait. A couple of great choices would include a podiatrist and chiropractor. Among a group of children with identified foot instability, 84 percent were pain-free (Ref #2). Even though their feet may feel fine, your child may be developing problems in the back, knees, or other parts of the body. Your child can be fitted for custom-made flexible orthotics developed exclusively for pre-adolescent patients. Flexible orthotics allow the developing foot to be supported through all of your child's activities and are clinically proven to be effective in your child's development. Tips on preparing your home for sale - www.ERA.com Homesellers don't always need to invest a lot of time and money in their property to create a good first impression for potential buyers. The National Association of Realtors reports that curb appeal sells half of all homes on the market today. "Curb appeal is the primary factor affecting a buyer's first impression of a home," says Broker Jess Nannini of ERA Golden Hills Brokers in San Ramon (CA). "In many cases, buyers make a decision on the home even before they walk through the front door." Peggy Perdue of ERA Oakcrest Realty, Inc. in Winchester (VA) frequently advises her clients to plant flowers outside of their home as an inexpensive way to add charm and color to the property. Curb appeal dramatically increases when the yard is neat. "Also, one of the first things a buyer sees is the front door, so that needs to be freshly painted. Even if the inside is their dream house, buyers will remember things like chipped paint on the front door and overgrown shrubs." Compliments of www.ERA.com The ERA real estate network includes 2,600 offices and 28,000+ brokers and sales associates throughout the United States and 29 other countries and territories. ----------------------------- 8. After some head scratching, it seems the problem was down to this setting: veto files = /.*/ which was there to prevent windows users from deleting their dot files. It seems XP accesses shares somewhat differently and, as far as we can make out from the logs, is trying to access shares/folders by "cd"-ing to the folder and then asking to list "." - which, of course, does not exist because samba has veto'd it... Our web searches at the time found quite a few people asking this question, but none with answers - I haven't tried searching since we found the solution. Perhaps it would be useful to add a warning about this setting mixed with XP in the smb.conf man page? Hoping this will help someone spend less time than I did on the problem... Eckert, D.C. - Editor http://www.PortlandHealth.org/doctorsoffice.shtml Changing Places… Margaret Croney, MSW They are going about their lives my parents. They are old; my mother is frail and my father protective of her. They live in their big house in the woods by a lake in the country, far from the local hospital and doctors. They make me proud, they make me scared, they make me afraid and they make me sad. Life is running swiftly by and each time I see them they are a little older, a little less determined and a little more dependent. We are changing places. They used to keep me safe from harm, watch me grow, and care for me. Now I try to keep them safe harm, watch them grow older and care for them. My parents are independent, strong willed and private. They do not want strangers in their home. They care for each other. They live a day-to-day routine that changes as the seasons do. They blossom in the spring and summer, they settle down in the fall to wait the winter. The winter is hard on them. They become isolated in the house in the county, the storms of snow too much to cope with; driving too difficult and stressful. Ice is to be feared. A fall, a broken bone can change the way they live. They wait and watch the roads, looking for the snowplow so they can go out. They go out to the doctors, out to the bakery, just out to have a coffee at the local donut shop. They depend on each other and on me, just as I once depended on them. We do not talk about this change in dependency. It is not acknowledged it is just there. The end is getting near. A few years, a few months, the autumn of their lives is past, they are in the winter. My mother questions me about my older clients. I understand the questions, she is checking, measuring and comparing. She offers comments but never reveals her thoughts. She wonders and questions if my clients have this symptom or that problem. They are amazing, and unique. They are my parents. I got them at birth and they are my link to my past. They are the only people that have known me throughout my life, from the time my mother was aware of her pregnancy until this moment, they have been there. They loved me, cared for me, watched out for me and kept harm from me. They struggled and strove after the war to raise their family. They taught values and planted the views and traits that have helped me through life. They taught me to care, to love, to watch, now I want to keep harm from them. Our parents have been there for us, with us, they are in our minds, in our lives, sometimes in our way. They have influenced us, they have made us who we are, and what we are,. More importantly we do not know the impact they have had on our lives and we will not know until they are gone. Slowly we are changing places. I watch, I worry, I care. I am quietly parenting. Thank you for your reply and helps. I amended the /etc/samba/smb.conf as suggested. However, I encounter new problems. In the Window client, I login as "Peter" and I can see the Linux Ser fine. However, when I clicked the Linux Ser, it did not promp me for passward but go right to the Netbios Name CHEE folder. When I clicked on the CHEE folder, it was an empty folder. (I would expected to see "Peter" and "Secretary" folder in my /home. And in /home/Peter I should see /tmp with an AutoCAD file try.dwg in it.) However, when I am login as "root" from the window client I can see my root folder and every thing in it under the CHEE folder (but I can not see other share Peter and Secretary) . I may missed something in my smb.conf. My revised smb.conf file is as following:- # Samba config file created using SWAT # from chee_ch.com (127.0.0.1) # Date : 2002/10/26 # Global parmeters [global] workgroup = CH netbios name = CHEE security =SHARE encrypt passward = Yes pam passward change = Yes passward program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *New*passward* %n\n* *Retype*new*passwd*%n\n*passwd:*all* *authentication*token*updated*successfully* log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log max log size = 0 socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF = 8192 SO_SNDBUF = 8192 dus proxy = No printing = lprng [printers] comment = All printer path = /var/spool/samba printeble = Yes brawsable = No [home] comment = Home Directories browseable = no writable = yes valid users = %S create mode = 0664 directory mode = 0775 My intention is to set up a Samba file server for the window client with each user login to their own /home (Peter, Secretary etc) directory. I think the above may be due permission I set to Peter and Secretary. How to correct it? Your reply is appreciated. Thank you. And in /home/Peter I should see /tmp with an AutoCAD file try.dwg in it.)
