From peter.a.bryant at mainroads.qld.gov.au Fri Mar 1 04:45:10 2002 From: peter.a.bryant at mainroads.qld.gov.au (peter.a.bryant@mainroads.qld.gov.au) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:27 2004 Subject: suggestion: small amendment to Printing How-to Message-ID: <4A256B6F.001A1CBD.00@shb1ln11.transport.qld.gov.au> Hi, I have a very small suggested amendment to Chapter 6 of the "Samba How-To Collection" document. This is the chapter about printing. The change I would like to see may seem trivial, but as a relative Samba Newbie, I took a while to figure out this section of the documentation... "Once you have created the required [print$] service and associated subdirectories, simply log onto the Samba server using a root (or printer admin) account from a Windows NT 4.0 client. Navigate to the "Printers" folder on the Samba server. You should see an initial listing of printers that matches the printer shares defined on your Samba host." It took me a while to work out how I was supposed to "navigate to the printers folder on the Samba server" and I wasn't sure just what printers folder the doco was referring to. I'd like to suggest this tiny amendment to the wording... "Once you have created the required [print$] service and associated subdirectories, simply log onto the Samba server using a root (or printer admin) account from a Windows NT 4.0 client. Open "Network Neighbourhood" or "My Network Places" and navigate to the "Printers" folder on the Samba server. You should see an initial listing of printers that matches the printer shares defined on your Samba host." I think this change would help some people and would not hinder anyone. I may look a little silly, but I hope this will help someone else. Thanks for your time. -peter. ************************************************************ Opinions contained in this e-mail do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Queensland Department of Main Roads, Queensland Transport or National Transport Secretariat, or endorsed organisations utilising the same infrastructure. Message-ID: <00b801c1c137$a41d9a10$4c7cce82@bulma> Well, I reviewed my email and there were some mistakes. Sorry, my english is not good enough!! I'm sending a new one. Dear friends, Finally, we've been successful with Samba's configuration. We think so ??. But now, we've another problems. At these moment, we can mount shared resources from a PC with Windows 98 in our Linux. We can do it, using either commands of Samba - smbmount - or Komba2 interface, that we've also installed. The 1st problem is that we can't mount shared resources from a PC with Windows 2000. Moreover this machine has a firewall installed. The firewall doesn't receive any request from our samba. The 2nd one is that the PCs with Windows98/2000 can?t see our PC with Linux/Samba over the net. We don't know what happens!! Can anybody help us? Message-ID: Hi all, Like certainly many members of those lists (SAMBA's list), I would like to contribute to SAMBA project. The main reason is because when you write something you must absolutely be familiar with the subject. It will give me oportunity to be (more) familiar with some kinds of SAMBA Spec. Since I read samba mailling list, many questions are post about SAMBA PDC, BDC, etc, interaction with Windows Domain, etc. I know that OpenSource Project are sometimes very busy and there're times where teams can't respond in good way to users questions. But don't giving the good respons in the right time could be for the company witch study OpenSource opportunity (SAMBA) a "bad OpenSource Experience". In fact I would like to write a sort of "Deployment and Integration Guide" based on some experience of some contributors and team members to this project (and SAMBA-TNG too). The goal is to give a chance of good and simple integration of SAMBA in all enterprises, and give the community some basic respons in the fisrt time : - Source of informations, mailing list, white papers, news, web, etc... - Does SAMBA will work with our enterprise architecture SCHEMS ? - What work ? - What don't work ? - What is plan and when ? - Technical success story and experience ! - Provide some graphic architecture SCHEMS, etc. I think for the user point of view, it is important that community be able to know the work of SAMBA-TNG too, since for beeginners (in the Linux world) it's not very "clear" what SAMBA provide and don't, what SAMBA-TNG provide and don't. All what I read talk about some "RPC things" witch in mind of some enterprise administrators is simply "technical noise". I know that some good books have been wrote on this subject, but (AFAIK) nothing really exist in the OpenSource Mind. I would like to know if someone of the samba team exist to validate a document like this one, and if some members of this team could be a central point for some questions I will (certainly) have ? Behind you will find a plan of this doc. Thanks for comments, and advise. Thierry DELHAISE Plan : - What manage and what provide Windows Domain ( Users account, Access Rights). - Introduction to MS architecture on Windows NT Domains with some SCHEMS. - Windows NT 4.0 architecture. - Windows 2000 architecture. - Mixed architecture (W2K and NT 4.0). - How does it work ?(technically). - Introduction to SAMBA ( What it provide, what it is not). - Samples integration schems. - How does it work ? - Planed scenarios to migrate to a full SAMBA domain in replacement of Windows one's. - ... Thanks. Although that would allow them to do things such as "receive email at user@linuxbox.some.domain" (that they really couldn't receive - can't log in) or have the Linux box answer to finger requests for that user, they wouldn't be able to log in and do anything... (Those problems in particular do have workarounds available...) If you're using encrypted Samba passwords, that should let the users make use of whatever Samba resources you specify in the smb.conf file, yet keep them out of the Linux side of things... Hmm - depending on your setup, you could add a "smbuser" account in Linux and/or Samba, and use the Windows "connect as another user" feature when mounting the SMB share on the client... I use a variation of this method that says "OK - if the user was validated by the domain controller, map the following drives to these Samba shares for everyone (read-only)." This is pretty much done on the Windoze side... --mike (Disclaimer for this message: it's been a long night, I need sleep, but I don't THINK there's any obvious reason not to do this... :) ) From jumamurat at yahoo.com Tue Mar 26 04:52:28 2002 From: jumamurat at yahoo.com (BAYJANOV JUMAMURAT) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:27 2004 Subject: QUESTION ABOUT SAMBA QONFIGURATION Message-ID: <20020326045228.41720.qmail@web14004.mail.yahoo.com> Thank you for your answer!
