A NON-critical documentation-and-policy question for 2.2.4: Currently, we sem to default mangled names = Yes (unless it just changed). This startled me, as I thought we were being NT-like. However, when i brought up smbfs on a linux test machine, all the names were in 8.3 format. I checked the 2.0.8 I was running and the 2.3-pre? I had been testing, and testparm claimed in both cases that the dedault was mangled names = Yes I changed it, of course, in my smb.conf, but it wasn't what I'd expected! I installed the printer driver thats first in the list of Apple printers (Apple Color LW 12/660 PS) on the client and verified that Samba got a PS file when printing. The problem though, was that I wanted the PS files to be transformed from PS -> pnm format (so that they could be used with the pnm2ppa application for my lousy 820Cxi printer), sometimes the pnm file output was corrupted. It didn't happen (as far as I could tell) with clients earlier than Win2000. After some trial and error I discovered that Win2000 seemed to produce a PS format that GhostScript (version 6.51) didn't really like, and the solution was to pass it trough GhostScript twice. So instead of having a filter like this: /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=ppmraw -sPAPERSIZE=$PAPER -q -dNOPAUSE -r600 -sOutputFile=- - I had a filter like this: /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=pswrite -sPAPERSIZE=$PAPER -q -dNOPAUSE -r600 -sOutputFile=- - | \ /usr/bin/gs -sDEVICE=ppmraw -sPAPERSIZE=$PAPER -q -dNOPAUSE -r600 -sOutputFile=- Which corrected all the problems I could see in the PS generated by Win2000. Now this isn't really a problem that Samba should deal with (GhostScript should be able to correct the PS in one sweep), but I thought it could be nice to add somewhere to the documentation that this trick might do it if recent versions of Windows produce bad PS. I have configured Samba 2.2.3a on a RH 7.1 server. It appears the install went fine and the server portion works. I am however having trouble on the WIN_NT cleint side. I have WIN_NT 4.0 service pack 6a and a couple of WIN_2000 Clients. I cannot seem to connect to the Samba server at all. The error message, "No server is operating at the destination network endpoint on the remote system" is driving me up the wall. Here is a list of things I can verify. 1. Server Daemons are running and listening on ports tcp 139 and udp 139. 2. The command 'smblient -L localhost' lists all my shares correctly. 3. The testparm command does not compalin about anything in my smb.conf file which is located in /etc/samba/. 4. Within the smb.conf file, encrypt passwd = yes is turned on and smb passwd file path is specified. 5. On the local WIN_NT and WIN_2000 clients, the UID and PASSWD are exactly the same as the /etc/passwd and /etc/samba/smbpasswd. I really need some guidenance here, if you cannot help or don't have time can you recommend a resource that can help me. I have been working away for 2 day's now and I am no further ahead than I was on Friday. Thanks in advance for your help. I have been all over RH's support site and that's how I arrived here. 6. SuSE for example creates a config for lisa automatically, and runs it automatically at boot, if you're using the kde packages from ftp.suse.com. The trouble with lisa (henceforth, PITA) is that it is very poorly documented, so if you have to create the config file by hand, best approach would be the KDE2 controlpanel applet for lisa/reslisa and then copy the resulting (revolting?) config file to /etc. bye [MH] From aurra at silver.udg.es Thu Feb 28 12:30:16 2002 From: aurra at silver.udg.es (Anna) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:27 2004 Subject: Samba y Windows 2000!!
