The reason we created samba_3_0 was becouse HEAD was getting unstable
and experimental code, but people are starting to *need* some of the
features just to be able to get work done.

As such the samba_3_0 branch was created.  Its in a bit of a limbo at
the moment - if I had more time I would at least get another alpha out
there.  

I think that Samba 3.0 should be released with approximatly the current
set of features + 2.2 printing, with only the usual bugfixes/ etc being
merged across.  We have a very well QA'ed product at the moment - I
would not like to loose that in the feature squese.
