I've occasionally brought my p200 class machines out of retirement for
Samba development (because I didn't have the right distro on my
desktop), but I don't oppose this.

If the time it takes is a problem, take a look at the 'optimization run
amuck' that Samba-TNG uses.  (make proto written in C).
