i'll try.  i've been using dirdiff, not diff and patch, and i switch off
whitespace, lines etc etc.  so the actual resultant code, after patches
are added by dirdiff (which uses straight diff, not diff -u or diff -c)
may not be very pretty, or take diff -u or diff -c patches!
