I have to admit that I only skimmed through the description. There is
definitely some more to this than in the other bug.

Have a look at https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2294#c14 though. The
patches linked there seem to already implement much of what you suggest (but
not things like fine grained control over depth for example). Make sure to
click them, they contain a detailed description of what they do.
