I'd imagine that your configure run was done on a filesystem that didn't
support hardlinked symlinks, since the test program it runs is super simple
and to the point.  If that's not the case, please check to see why the
simple test program fails. (Search for CAN_HARDLINK_SYMLINK in configure.ac
to see what it is.)
