More feedback. This can be replicated I believe using the -vvvv option better.
I have found the script fails way less when using just -v. So:
rsync -e ssh -avvvz -stats --delete-after --exclude=core --timeout=1800
fails easier than:
rsync -e ssh -avz -stats --delete-after --exclude=core --timeout=1800
