rsync and the iconv-switch

If you didn't have a "charset = utf-8" option in the daemon rsyncd.conf,
rsync would have reported back that the daemon was refusing the --iconf
 option.  The error above probably indicates that the daemon got an
iconv_open() error.  Check the daemon's log file to see why it is having a
problem.
