Which rsync is considered modern?

I'm using this rsync:

# rsync --version
rsync  version 2.6.8  protocol version 29

Manpage states the following:
<QUOTE>
For remote transfers, a modern  rsync  uses  ssh for  its communications
<UNQUOTE>

Indeed I see rsync invoking ssh, yet I wonder what is considered "modern"?
