Oh.  I didn't see this mentioned anywhere.

I found out why, as I wrote via Bugzilla.  At least 2.6 linuxes require
the xaddrs patch.  I've not tried on a 2.4 (but I will as I'm curious). 
Solaris does not require the xaddrs patch.
