I agree and I have some very strange behaviors with Mac OS X:

ckrmac:/tmp root# echo /tmp/t*
/tmp/tété
ckrmac:/tmp root# ls /tmp/t*
/tmp/te??te??

it seems that bash understand but not /bin/ls :-(
